Experience Hanau
Hanau, the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm, is developing rapidly. The number of inhabitants, jobs and new residential areas is rising continuously.
With its districts of Steinheim, Klein-Auheim, Großauheim/Wolfgang, Mittelbuchen and Kesselstadt, the city on the Main and Kinzig rivers offers tradition and high-tech, extensive nature reserves and globally active industrial companies, a wide range of educational opportunities, a large number of active clubs and associations and plenty of culture. Hanau is therefore a worthwhile destination for tourists and event organizers.
Hanau is a sight to behold: Buildings such as Philippsruhe Palace with its beautiful park along the Main or the picturesque old town of Steinheim immediately catch the eye, while others can only be discovered at second glance.
The city’s special attractions include the Wilhelmsbad state park with its historic spa facilities and the Comoedienhaus, the old town center of Kesselstadt and the “Alte Fasanerie” wildlife park in Klein-Auheim with around 350 animal species, including a pack of polar wolves. Ten museums and numerous galleries invite you to visit all year round, along with many other exhibition venues.
Culture and scene
With the Brothers Grimm Festival in the amphitheatre, the symphony series Congress Park Sinfonie, numerous concerts, a wide variety of cabaret, literary events, the KultourSommer series of events with the crowd-puller “Hanauer Sommernacht” and much more, the city offers a varied and sophisticated cultural program throughout the year.
The modern cultural forum in the heart of the city with six educational and cultural institutions offers a unique public space for reading and learning culture. Numerous high-quality restaurants, stylish bars and trendy clubs invite you to enjoy and celebrate and offer constantly changing events. The traditional Lamboyfest and the Bürgerfest, the popular Christmas market and various district festivals enrich the entertainment on offer.
Markets and trade
On Wednesdays and Saturdays, Hanau’s weekly market attracts visitors to the market square, directly in front of the town hall in the city center, with over 90 stalls and a wide range of culinary delights. The “Forum Hanau” shopping center and numerous specialist stores make Hanau attractive for residents, guests and businesses alike.
Several times a year, various events such as market days and sales days attract people from near and far to the city center.
Nature and local recreation
Hanau is a city surrounded by greenery: many urban green spaces and parks as well as surrounding nature and landscape conservation areas invite you to discover, linger and enjoy nature. Two rivers, lined in places by floodplain meadows and forests, cross Hanau.
There are also various landscape conservation areas as well as FFH areas recognized throughout Europe and several protected landscape features. For example, in the Großauheim district of Hanau: a herd of Przewalski’s horses lives in the “Campo Pond” nature reserve there.
